New Release: The Date by Archive Institute
Archive Institute is a new collaboration between Micah Dailey (Fünke), Tim Burnett (Dutch), and Lonna Kelley (Maria Franz). The alter-ego’s set the tone of a sense of departure from their past work to let loose and make something different without expectation. Recorded to tape, and released on cassette, I’m listening to the FLAC rendering from bandcamp as I wait for the cassette to arrive. Not the intended first impression, but this is a playful collection of songs from some of my favorite Phoenix artists that I really enjoy. Fans of 80’s minimal post-punk and 4-track experiments will feel right at home. It’s a spacious hang on tape. Highly recommended!
New Release: Water Season by Winter and Hooky
Winter and Hooky have a new collaborative EP called Water Season out now on Julia’s War Recordings. Thick with playful effects and recording experiments, this reminds me of a lot of my favorite experimental indie sounds from the early 2000’s I thought I’d never hear again in modern music. Tastefully psychedelic, warbly, and addictive thanks to Winter’s beautiful hooks melding into the hypnotic production conjurings of Hooky. I’m not sure what contributions each made to the songs, but it sounds wonderful, and they produced something beautiful and new together that’s distinct from their solo projects. Clocking in at 8 minutes and 46 seconds, it’s well worth a few listens. This may inspire you to dust off some old effect pedals and a tape recorder you’ve been neglecting.
PsychicHomily.com is now live!
Welcome to the shiny new Psychic Homily website ✨
This project has been in the works for the past few weeks as a labor of love to build a show list and blog to help bolster the AZ music community, and hopefully get more people to come out to shows. It’s a real challenge to keep up with all of the show announcements and new releases on Instagram alone, and for those who don’t look at Instagram every day, a lot of those show announcements will be missed. Why is Instagram so important? It seems to be the most reliable and active social media platform for keeping up with artists, for better or worse. In the past, alt-weekly’s did a great job of listing excellent shows, but in modern times, there’s so much noise and non-music events to sift through to find the truly special and unmissable show announcements. That’s a void this website will hopefully help fill, along with others I may not have encountered.
